How to Wear a Bolo Tie with Style

How to wear Bolo Tie

Bolo ties are a perfect representation of the country lifestyle. For decades, we’ve been hardworking folks with the motivation and work ethic necessary to turn everything we touch to gold. Cowboys have withstood all manner of challenges over the years, from hot climates to physical injuries and everything in between. If you put some muscle into it, you can accomplish anything. And your style needs to allow you some breathing room. Bolo ties are a good way to toe the line between casual and stylish. They’re simple to make and highly effective at conveying your laidback country style.

  1. Choose a cord. The perfect bolo tie starts with the cord, and there are countless varieties to choose from. Bolos are braided out of either cord or leather strips. Both ends of the tie are sealed with metal tips, which are also decorative additions. The cords are then threaded or fixed with a versatile, movable metal clasp. Want to make an even bolder statement? The clasps are often adorned with traditional Western designs and patterns.Bolo cords can be purchased at your local Western wear store or bait and tackle shop. You might be overwhelmed by the variety of lengths and styles that are available, but it is important to remember that each cord ends about three or four inches below the breastbone. If you are at least six feet tall, it is advisable to buy a cord between 26 and 28 inches in length.
  2. Pair it with the perfect shirt. The key to wearing a bolo tie is to pair it with the right outfit, and your choice of shirt is crucial. In the past, cowboys have typically paired bolo ties with Western dress shirts or collared button-downs, but many modern men are now choosing to add a touch of class to their most casual old T-shirt by combining it with a classy and unique bolo tie. Many bolo tie fans believe that the style is appropriate with any type of shirt, from your most casual denim button-down to a tuxedo. Since a bolo is such a small statement piece, you can easily take it from work to play without too much hassle. Whether you’re heading out for drinks with friends after work or dressing up for a black-tie affair, a bolo is a smart and snappy addition to any outfit.
  3. Learn how to wear it. Bolo ties are traditionally worn like any other type of neck tie, but in some cases, you’ll need to make some adjustments to make sure your bolo looks as stylish as possible. For instance, when you’re wearing a button-down, the slide or clasp on the tie should be raised as high as it can go, so it sits beneath the collar.A good rule of thumb is this: the higher the clasp, the more dignified and sophisticated you appear. Lowering the slide, on the other hand, gives you a casual appearance. The great thing about bolo ties is their versatility!
  4. Choose your decorative adornments wisely. If you’re a no-nonsense, rugged outdoorsy kind of guy, you might not warm up to the idea of a decorative clasp or slide right away. But once you discover just how many options there are available to you in your local Western wear shop, you just might find yourself a new convert.Historically, homemade bolo ties were pinned and clasped by any found object a cowboy could wrangle up. Stones, bottle caps, coins, jewelry, and even seashells were some of the innovative ideas that cowboys of the past used to clasp their ties. Bolo ties might be considered slightly more formal than they were in the past, but the creativity they allow still make them a popular choice for the DIY crowd.
