Why Not All Cowboy Boots Look the Same

Cowboy boots have been a staple of Western style for decades. For born-and-bred country folk, they’re just as suitable while roping on a cattle ranch as they are on a fun weekend out with your friends. Depending on how formal the style of boot is, they can even be worn to work. There are many ways to wear your boots, from rugged to casual to elegant. Both men and women have a lot of options available to them, no matter what their preferred style might be.

We suspect that cowboy boots are becoming more widely appreciated outside of country circles. With the recent influx of country-pop crossover recording artists reaching a national audience, and the comeback of ‘70s-style fashion such as fringe jackets and bootcut jeans, it seems reasonable to predict that traditional country fashion will be making a significant impact on Hollywood, too.

If you’re new to the country world and you find yourself balking at the prospect of wearing cowboy boots in any setting other than a line dance, don’t fear. The reason that cowboy boots can be a hard fad to get into is because there are so many varieties to choose form. In addition, each style of boot has subtle differences that you may not notice at first. Want to get on board with the cowboy boot trend? Here are some of the ways in which you can differentiate between the old, the new, and the truly unique styles of boot.

Different Toe Styles

Not all cowboy boots are created equal. The same boot that you wear to a barn dance might look out of place for a night out on the town, but that doesn’t mean you can’t figure out what works best for you and run with it. Consider what your personal style is, and then review the various toe styles available.

Fashion, like most things, is cyclical. Experts say that toe styles typically evolve every 40 years, so what was popular during your great-grandfather’s days in the Wild West might look outdated now. As menswear continues to develop, so do the variety of ways that men across the nation can show off their country roots. Here are some of the ways in which cowboy boots differ, and tips on how to style each one.

Classic and Traditional

The wild square toe is an old standard, beloved by cowboys from Montana to Texas and still one of the preferred styles in menswear after several decades running. This look is great for casual outfits, such a faded T-shirt and blue jeans—but it can work for more formal occasions as well if you pair it with dark jeans and a dress shirt.

Round-toed cowboy boots are a safe and simple alternative for those cowboys who are a little bit more conservative with their style choices. While popular trends change like the weather, country style is often quite traditional. One of the nice things about Western fashion is its tried-and-true simplicity. If you’re more comfortable sticking with what you know, the round toe does not, fortunately, appear to be going anywhere.

Edgy and Alternative

If you’re a little bit country and a little bit rock ’n’ roll, you probably don’t want to blend in with the crowd. Give your look a bit of a kick with a slightly different style of boot, such as the snip toe. It’s a relatively new style, and one that tends to be favored by working professionals and city transplants who still want to remind their colleagues that they’re a country kid at heart. If you work in a formal environment or an office setting, you can wear a snip toe with a pair of dressy jeans on casual Friday and no one will bat an eye. In fact, they might just ask where you got your stylish footwear.

The pointed toe was once unexplored territory for men, belonging solely to the realm of women’s footwear. But as menswear becomes more accepting of new and interesting trends, the pointed toe is starting to earn its place amongst the elite. If you’re a man with a bit of an bold or daring side, show off with your sense of danger and pair a pointed toe with a pair of dress pants. Don’t be afraid to break new ground and make a statement!
