How to Earn Your Spurs and Dress Like a Cowboy

How to Earn Your Spurs and Dress Like a Cowboy

There are a few different definitions of a cowboy. You have the ones that work cattle ranches all over North America. You have others that work the rodeo circuit. And others are known as cowboys simply for their toughness in everyday life.

The cowboy has been admired by many in America for a long time and the style and way of life remain inspiring today. As a result, many wear the cowboy look with pride.

If you’re going to wear the cowboy look it’s important to do it right.

Here are 5 ways to dress like a cowboy.

1. Hat

Hats are serious business when it comes to cowboy attire. Some may say you learn a lot of things about a cowboy by the way they wear their hat. You can see his style, his preference for color and function. Every little mark, scar and scratch gives an indication of where he’s been and how he’s lived.

Cowboy hats come in various sizes, shapes, material and design. Like anything in life, you get what you pay for. Many enjoy the comfort, style and appeal of felt, but others like the ruggedness of leather and or the uniqueness of fur.

Find an image of a cowboy that appeals to you. Find a hat that fits that style, but that fits you well and looks good.

2. Boots

Boots, like hats, are essential cowboy attire. Boots are functional when it comes to riding and dealing with a horse as well as working on the ranch.

Here’s an interesting fact, cowboy boots have raised heels not for style, but for function. The higher heel allows the cowboy’s boot not to slip forward in the stirrup, which can lead to a dangerous situation.

Cowboy boots are an iconic American fashion item. They’ve transcended decades of changes in fashion and remain popular today.

Cowboy boots are an essential item when you want to look like a cowboy, they bring the whole cowboy attire together. Just like hats, cowboy boots come in all different styles, material and designs.

There are western style boots and boots with a style more suited for different types of work. There are different heights, toe styles and patterns. Choose one that goes with your personality. That might be flashy and outgoing or it might be more laid back and traditional.

3. Jeans

Jeans are as American as apple pie and they’re connected with cowboys as well. Jeans are rugged and required for working the ranch.

However, finding the perfect pair of jeans is not the easiest thing to do. When you are looking for the perfect pair of jeans it’s good to go with a basic dark denim with straight legs.

Dark jeans have been able to stand the test of time. They can be worn in a number of different settings. Lighter jeans can work too, but have had a tendency to come and go as styles change. When choosing the right pair of jeans, simple is best. Jeans are a major part of the cowboy look, but you don’t want them to make the wrong statement.

4. Shirt

The western shirt is functional for a cowboy. A shirt protects the cowboy from dust and sun. It’s also comfortable and breathable.

A straight fit, button down shirt will get the job done.

There are a few different patterns, colors and styles. You can go with something more neutral in color. This is a classic look. You can add something a little more colorful for a night out. Plaid has been in style for a long time and remains common today.

5. Belt

Wearing a belt with your jeans is a must.

The cowboy belt buckle is iconic. Rodeo cowboys often receive a buckle as a trophy for winning a competition. Belts have been perhaps the most expressive part of a cowboy’s style. They can be really big or more understated and functional. Make sure the color works well with the rest of your attire. Make sure your belt makes the statement you want it to because people will notice it.

The belt is the final piece that brings your entire cowboy look together.
When it comes to dressing like a cowboy it is important to remember these 5 essential items.
